POPPY ROAD -  November 2018

For the centenary of  WW1   ALHS partnered with the  Aldridge Great War Project  and over the four years,  a team of ALHS  members assisted in the research of the  histories of the men from Aldridge who went to war.  ALHS  suggested that some of those histories could form the basis of a poppy trail  around the village. That idea culminated in the hugely successful  POPPY ROAD event in November 2018 when Station  Road Aldridge became a sea of poppies for two weeks.

Station Road was chosen because of the significant number of men who went to war from that single road in the village , but the event was a tribute to honour all the local people who endured the Great War of 1914 -18.  Silhouettes represented those from Station Road who did not return.

TRIP TO CROMFORD MILL

AND CRICH TRAMWAY VILLAGE 1940s EVENT 21ST APRIL 2014

We began our visit with a one hour tour of Sir Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill. Arkwright was born in 1732 and was a pioneer of the Industrial Revolution through his inventions of cotton spinning machinery and manufacture.

We then moved on to the nearby Willersley Castle Hotel  for a 2 course cooked lunch.    The construction of  Willersley Castle began in 1790, commissioned by Sir Richard Arkwright as his new home.

After lunch we  spent  the afternoon at the Crich Tramway Village 1940s weekend. Here we could explore and ride on the largest collection of vintage electric trams in Britain. With this also being the1940s weekend,  it gave us a real taste of life during the Second World War. Policemen and members of the Home Guard were  patrolling the period streets as were the spivs selling black market goods . Historic wartime road vehicles were  on show mingling with a range of vintage trams. Wartime songs were  belted out by an authentic concert party throughout the day
